You know what I'd *really* like to be? A vicar. Getting up on frosty Sunday morings to open the church. Organising jumble sales. Cycling round my parish to administer the word of the Lord and receive tea. Visiting the sick. Giving entertaining yet thought provoking sermons. Running funky outreach programmes to show just how trendy the church is. Being calm and serene. I could do all that, except of course for being an atheist, which is a bit of a nuisance really.

Or being Listwriter General. Being in charge of all the lists that need to be written and writing them. And then writing an index which lists where the lists can be found.

Organising things. Writing itineraries.

Starting a vegetarian winery.

Owning a vegetarian B&B in Orkney, with a little workshop attached for Simon's silversmith business, and an attic for me to write in.

Lots of whimsical ideas, but probably on a more practical level...

Something where I would not have to move house right now.

Something that isn't really related to education or I'm probably better off sticking with what I'm doing now.

Something that doesn't involve costly retraining.

Preferably something where I earn my age in thousands, although I suspect that unless I stop getting any older that's going to get increasingly difficult.

I suppose one option might be to drop down to part time at work, and supplement it by doing exam marking and suchlike. It's something I could find out a little more about.

Earning your age in thousands. That'd be lovely. However, I can't think of many careers that allow you to do that which don't have specific professional qualifications to get into, and sometimes not even then (e.g. I dream about earning my age in thusands - don't go into law!).

There's a few. There are highly paid jobs in many careers. It's a matter of climbing the greasey pole effectively enough to get them.

Now that's interesting, as I'd have put law down as more highly paid than teaching. I would have thought you'd be paid more than me. Is it a common misconception?

Very common. Common enough that I went into law partially because I thought it was well paid.

To be fair, I can hardly complain - I should expect my earnings are above the national average, but they're still some way off being the same as my age.

I think it depends on the field of law. My older sister is earning twice her ages in thousands, but then that's divorce law in a city firm...

Consultancy - you get the wage youre after, and theres bound to be an examiners consultants, or school consultants, or , oh god I don't know. But yeah, consultancy - you earn about £500 per half days work!

Some form of community worker? Would cover most of the vicar bit but they don't mind about the atheism.

What's annoying you about teaching? My mum got very hacked off with it, but found that changing area/age made a big difference (Went from Secondary History/RE/others to Special Needs Nursery)

I am of the opinion that what the Church of England needs is more aetheist vicars.

I mean I for one would be tempted to go to Church and be an active member of a local community if it were not for the whole religion thing; High Church Aetheists could have a glass of passable claret and a biscuit.

Earning your age in thousands. I see you share that idea too. Its reassuring to see that we're in the same boat on that one. Love the B&B in Orkney idea, I'm personally looking forward to the small farmhouse in rural spain with an orange grove.

re-training or jumping to a new financially uncertain lilly pad is much easier if you don't jump right to the other side of the pond in one go.

I've found that little hops between freelance work, dressmaking and other bits 'n bobs has kept me moving in the right direction with out sinking.

If you could figure out a way of doing some p/t teaching or private tutoring while you change direction - you may not be rich or entirely happy, but you can work towards something more rewarding like your Orkney writers loft long term.

Simon B calls my approach modular economics - which sounds very grand - but it does mean that I've muddled through two years without the full-time job that I'd come to hate.

I agree that librarianship might well suit. Retraining = a pain though.

Am going through the whole thinking about career/reducing hours thing here. Haven't reached any conclusions.

And I do earn over my age, but I'm certainly not sure it helps

Animal Behaviourist - the enquiries I made (for Java) seemed to average out at £40 pound an hour (plus travel expenses) though I don't know how much work they actually get. And theres probably a lot of distance between appointments.
