re-training or jumping to a new financially uncertain lilly pad is much easier if you don't jump right to the other side of the pond in one go.

I've found that little hops between freelance work, dressmaking and other bits 'n bobs has kept me moving in the right direction with out sinking.

If you could figure out a way of doing some p/t teaching or private tutoring while you change direction - you may not be rich or entirely happy, but you can work towards something more rewarding like your Orkney writers loft long term.

Simon B calls my approach modular economics - which sounds very grand - but it does mean that I've muddled through two years without the full-time job that I'd come to hate.
