Watched a recording of Peter Kay at the Comedy Store on Channel 5 last night. I think he's absolutely hilarious and spot on in his observation, but [livejournal.com profile] lupercal and I were discussing whether it was a northern thing ot not - do you have to have a northern upbringing to fully get the stuff he does?

So I thought I'd do a poll. For the purpose of this, north means anything above Nottingham, and south anything below it.

[Poll #475310]

You need a 'I have never seen his act' option :)

Ah - but I only really want to find out if people who've seen his stand up stuff find it funny and whether there's a correlation with where they live.

I wanted to answer the second part honestly, but there's no option for stupid, purile and not at all funny, ever

:/

That's interesting as I find his stand-up stuff absolutely spot-on in accuracy, and a very good reflection of northern - mostly working class - life - and very warm and honest about it.

I'm not going to fill in the poll, because the ticky that fits me (brought up both North (Stockport) and South (Oxford)) doesn't exist. While you'll probably insist that I'm far more Southern than Northern (and I'd agree with you), a lot of my formative childhood memories came from observing the absurdities of my Northern family half, and I think he's hilarious because large chunks of his routine remind me of that.

However, my flatmate is as Southern as it gets and he was the one who insisted I give Kay (whom I'd only previously seen on bad adverts) a try.

I think it's possibly an identity question. I've lived in what I'd consider 'the south' for over a decade, but I'd still consider myself as 'northern'

I think it helps to have some kind of Northern connection - like, my mum's from Wigan, my dad from Warrington, my wife's from Hull and most of my extended family still live up that end of the country.

Lived in the North for 20 years, though so I'm sort of a Northerner by osmosis.

No suitable button for me, having been brought up in the north, the south, and two other countries.

I think he's very engaging as well as funny.

He's brilliant. Watched his stand up on DVD and my sides were splitting from laughing so much. Like you I was brought up in the north from a working class background. Most of my family are from around Blackburn.

I think it also helps that he's a similar age to me so all the stuff he goes on about I remember. I'm not sure it would make sense to someone in their early 20's or teens.

Shame I missed the recording last night. There's DVD's of him at Blackpool Tower and at Bolton Town Hall.
