Tomorrow I will post my entry - Pooka the Brave - to The Little Tiger Press short story competition. Many thanks for ashenkat for alerting me to it.

I am going to enter Children's Writers' & Artists' Yearbook 2006 competition.

I am going to send the synopsis and first three chapters of The Grumpskwallor to three publishers that accept unsolicited manuscripts by the end of this year.

If only I could find a publisher that accepted unsolicited manuscripts of children's poetry...

One strategy you might want to use would be to register a domain & have a website purely for your poems, then all us lot on your FL go promote it everywhere by effectively name-dropping it whenever we can feasibly do so. When you get to the point where a google search for "Children's poetry" gives your website at the top, any publisher would be stupid not to sign you up.

Good for you, I've read a few of the stories/ poems that you have posted on line and have really admired your precise use of language (if that makes any sense)and unusual stories. I wish I could give myself the same kick up the arse... now, where did I put my pint?

There's a thing you need to do and I can't remember what its called, but hopefully I can describe it and then you can try find out.

Rather than trying to get the manuscripts of childrens poetry published, you write to the publisher asking to go on their "thingy list" using one or two choice examples of poetry as examples of style, not for consideration for publication.

The "thingy list" is the list of people they send concept for new series to and request words for picture books - always to a specific (tiny) number of words. The zoo poem made me think of this as it would very clearly work brilliantly as a picture book. Of course to do this you'll have to find out what the "thingy list" is actually called. I'm sorry the talk was over 2 years ago and my brain is not what it was.

Another thing is that apparently a lot of the womens magazines and journals like people's friend have a childrens section and may well take unsolicited ms - worth a try...
