Am already planning next year's trip

It's certainly making me think about having a break somewhere later this year.

Very nice.

I hadn't realised the Westray boat hadn't been replaced with a ro-ro. It still looks very much like a slightly larger version of the one I spent two days on 20 years ago pootling around between all of the isles.

Lovely pics - I'm going to have a proper look later. And yes, Wick was goadawful. Having only seen Inverness and Wick has given me an unfortunate slant on Scottish towns, I think.

All looks very idyllic. We have just got back from Cornwall (so you went extreme north, we went extreme south!)

It looks amazing, thank you both for sharing the pictures. I've been 'planning to plan' a trip way way way up there for sometime but without a car I fear I would miss an awful lot. I'm certainly feeling inspired to plan some more though!

Wow, nice pics. The shark is straight out of Jaws, if slightly smaller. :)

I think all of us who've seen that movie as kids retain an almost instinctive fear of that unmistakeable fin silhouette. [livejournal.com profile] erkyn sent me a series of emails from his Antipodean adventures; one of them mentioned how he and his girlfriend were going on a high-end scuba course, and the subsequent one explained how he'd decided that water was an unnatural environment for humans as he'd just seen his first shark.

Mine Howe looks fascinating. My first thought as to the "ritual purpose" would be some kind of initiatory experience -- it's got the classic sensory deprivation stuff going on, is a dramatic & claustrophobic location, and would work well for any kind of liminal initiation ritual.

Knap of Hower -- 5.5 thousand years old eh? What builder today would give you that kind of guarantee for any work they did?

Great photos - looks such a beautiful place. Thankyou for taking the time to put them up and the commentary too.

Sigh. I have been following that BBC program, Coast and found myself longing to live by the sea.
