I love the smell of irony in the morning...

From the BBC news website. Deborah Fermor, manager of John O'Groats Ferries, disputes the "tourist trap" label given to john O'Groats by the new edition of the Lonely Planet guide.

Ms Fermor said: "I wouldn't say it was a seedy tourist trap, we have shops here like the Woollen Mill and souvenirs too.

John O'Groats has one major attraction. It's the _only_ ground for 20 miles that is firm enough to stand on, yet soft enough enough to get a tent peg into it. Two of us spent a windily unsuccessful night trying to camp anywhere nearby once, before we admitted defeat and paid up for the official campsite. You can't just kip inside a motorbike (or for that matter, probably a Smart)

Orkney is of course far better. That's worth the trip, the end of the mainland isn't.
