Good news! Good news!

"Researchers at Granada University in Spain have discovered that a pint of beer - post exercise - is better for rehydrating the human body than water. After trials, Granada's Professor Manuel Garzon found that the sugars, salts and bubbles in a beer help people to absorb fluids more quickly"

Giant African Land Snails

My remaining GAL has self-fertlized whilst I wasn't looking, and I have lots of tiny baby snails.

Is anyone interested in having a few as pets? Or does anyone know anyone who would like some?

Chortle

I know it's the Daily Mail, but if this doesn't raise a smile for you today, I don't think anything will.

Amnesty Greetings Card Campaign

The Amnesty Greetings Card Campaign LJ community

I want you to add me to your greetings card list!

Well, not me, exactly.

Between 1 November and 31 January, Amnesty International is asking supporters to send cards with messages of hope and solidarity to people in danger or unjustly imprisoned.

You can read more about the campaign here. Please have a look.

I know it's often difficult to get involved in campaigns and take part in stuff we want to take part in. We're stuck for time, we've got so much on we forget about stuff...and the Amnesty campaign lists so many people - where do I start? So it struck me - an easy way to take part in the campaign by sending just one additional card this festive season.

I'd like to ask two things - if you could do one, or the other, or both, that would be great.

The first thing I'm asking is for people to volunteer to post one card.

If you would like to volunteer to do this, just leave a comment on [livejournal.com profile] aiuk_cards. I'll then reply to your comment with one case in the Amnesty campaign, and a link to their details on Amnesty's website. You just add that person to your greetings card list, and post it with all your others. (Check postage at your post office!)

The second thing I'm asking, is for people to put an entry in their journal, directing people to [livejournal.com profile] aiuk_cards.

In case you're interested, I'm giving out the details randomly but systematically, if that makes sense - no priorities, none regarded as more important than others. If you send one card, the you're also helping all the other cards get out too. Any other information you need to know you'll be able to find on Amnesty's site.

Time to get this snowball rolling!

Internal dialogue

id: CHRIST! I'M HEOMORAGING! OH JESUS GOD! I'M DYING! I'M GOING TO FAINT! FOR GOD'S SAKE SOMEONE HELP ME! I'M BLEEDING! I'M BLEEDING!!!!!

Ego: Hang on a moment id. I don't think we *are* heomoraging you know. Do you remember we ate all that beetroot for lunch? Perhaps the beetroot is a more plausable reason than impending death?

Super ego: For heaven's sake, can't we just flush it please and go and have a nice cup of tea?

Dear Lazyweb....bias

I'm putting together a pack of materials for English Language AS next year in bias:

"how writers/speakers use lnguage to convey bias, prejudices, feelings, attitudes, points of view etc."

If anyone thinks of anything that would work, let me know.

I've already got a great Daily Mail article on 'the sinister cult of Emo', and a few bits and pieces on gender.
